Lignin Industries starts production of lignin-based material Renol®, to replace fossil-based plastics, with a capacity of more than 1000 tonnes/year

Lignin Industries is proud to announce the start of production of Renol® that will make a true impact on the market and speed up the journey towards a world without fossil-based plastics.  The installation of Coperion’s state-of-the art twin screw extruder was successful and production has already started, according to schedule.

Lignin Industries patented technology is based on lignin, a by-product from the forest industry, transforming it into a high-performance renewable material that will replace plastics. Renol® can be used in ratios up to 30 % in applications such as films (shopping bags, mulch films or retail bags), injection moulding (furniture and automotive parts) and as an infill material for artificial football pitches replacing toxic and non-degradable rubber.

With extraordinarily low carbon footprint and water consumption, and with high mechanical and physical properties, Renol® is a powerful solution for replacing and reducing the use of fossil-based plastics.

Smart, efficient and with no release of toxic emissions or hazardous components, Lignin Industries process starts with a thousand tonnes and can easily be scaled further thanks to Coperion’s high-quality equipment, designed for Lignin Industries technology.

“We are very happy to be able to support this young company on their exciting journey. We see big potential for their lignin-based product helping to lower the carbon footprint and are proud to support them with their sustainable products”, comments Peter von Hoffmann, General Manager Business Unit Engineering Plastics & Special Applications at Coperion.

Lignin Industries have conducted several successful projects during 2020, especially together with The Swedish Energy Agency, and with close partners in Europe, Asia, and America. Renol® is now ready for the market and the first batches of commercial volumes will be shipped in the first quarter of 2021.

We, at Lignin Industries, are very proud about achieving a fast and efficient scale-up by applying extruder technology for our Renol process. We are now excited to start our production and supply our customers with hundreds of tonnes of material “, says Johan Verendel, Lignin Industries Chief Technical Officer.
